Of the hundreds of games I own, and the thousands more I have played, this is still an easy favourite. It has an elegance lacking in many of today’s newer games.
The concept is simple, players must work plantations to gain goods which can then be sold for gold or shipped for victory points. Buildings can be purchased for gold and they give players special powers which help them throughout the game.
The role selection mechanism which was made popular here (and has since been copied by many other games like TI3 and Race for the Galaxy) is brilliantly implemented and is the source of much angst and tension in the game.
Overall I can’t think of the better game to have occupied the #1 slot in BGG for so many years.
