Arkham Horror
When an investigator has an encounter, let another player read the event without disclosing the results of a passed/failed check. For example:
“You see a terrible eye watching over a stone chest. You may make a sneak (-1) check. If you succeed, draw 1 unique item. If you fail, it sees you! Lose 2 sanity.”
would be read something like:
“Up ahead, you see an unblinking disembodied eye watching a stone chest. Would you like to try to sneak up and open it?”
This makes encounters more suspenseful for everyone and more thematic – from the investigator’s perspective, they wouldn’t purposefully fail at running away from something because they would ‘only lose 1 stamina’.
