Catan: Explorers & Pirates
Explorers and Pirates is a expansion with some of the most fun and engaging mechanics introduced to the Catan system. The introduction of the two unexplored areas creates a race to find the resources you need. The introduction of the new element via scenarios is a great way to teach all the content in the game (if my mom can get it, so can you.) The Gold as a mechanic has been brought back from other expansions I like having the ability to pay for resources I need with it, but this eliminates the importance of trading. During play I only traded when I knew I could get a better deal than a trade with a bank. I do feel that the introduction of the pirate as a replacement to robber is a good idea but in this game you can fight off the pirates but there seem to be no repercussions for failure. A house rule I made to resolve this issue was if you lose the fight pay two gold. Its fun, stressful in a good way and I love it. 9/10
