In the spring of 1812 the armies of Napoleonic France were masters of continental Europe. Even as their emperor prepared for his epic invasion of Russia, Napoleon’s marshals gathered their forces for one final campaign to subdue the last pockets of resistance to imperial rule. One man stood between them and the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula: an English general called Sir Arthur Wellesley, better known to history as the Duke of Wellington.
