Although I’ve heard this is solved a bit in the expansion(s), in the base game, I’ve found that over about 20 games 1v1, getting animals and cooking/mating them has consistently been the winning strategy over farming grain/vegetables despite more than few times one of us has started with the professions/improvements that would support heavy farming.
With more people there’s enough people competing for the animals that you’re incentivized to try something different, but it’s of course harder to get the critical mass of people geared up to try something new and/or this fiddly.
