Citadels

53 out of 69 gamers thought this was helpful

For those of you who haven’t played, the point of the game is to build districts in your Citadel. The first player who builds 8 districts ends the game. At that point, players count up the price of all of their built districts (and add bonuses), and whoever has the most expensive Citadel at the end of the game wins.

The thing that gives this game its uniqueness is the Character mechanic. Each round, players choose one out of 8 (or 9) characters to be. Each characters has a special ability (for example, the Theif can steal other character’s money, and the Warlord can destroy opponents districts). The characters are chosen by players in a fashion that no one knows who chose what. The characters chosen are kept secret until each character’s number is called. The players play in sequence from characters 1 to 8 (or 9).

Citadels is a fantastic party game, especially when you’re playing with clever friends!

The thing that intrigues me the most about this game is how human oriented it is. Instead of having to roll a die or work on your own, a lot of this game has to do with how you deal with the other players on a social level. Do you make friends and enemies, or do you try to keep isolated? I suppose that’s how it is for many games, but Citadels is a game that portrays this concept extremely well.
