b0bb33z3r, XP collected is a party resource. So, any XP you earn from killing monsters goes into a shared pool. Then, as a team, you can decide if you want to spend 5 XP to cancel a particularly nasty encounter card, or save it for when someone rolls a natural 20 to level up!
Typically, the party begins an adventure with 2 Healing Surges. Though the rulebook mentions that you can adjust that number to 3 or 1 if you want to make the game easier or harder.
