What are you playing this weekend?

[update: And what are you playing over Thanksgiving holiday (24th-27th)?]

For the most part our news has been about what we’ve done on the site, what we’re going to do, and what games have been added. I’d like to bring some community togetherness to the news section. What’s our community up to? Who are we as gamers? Let’s share our interests, experiences, events we’ve gone to, thoughts, opinions, and more.

So… What’s everyone playing this weekend?
My brother and I had a game night last night and pulled out some Talisman and Blood Bowl: Team Manager. My brother played Talisman, but I got to try my hand at Blood Bowl! Around the table was me a power gamer, a newbie to games, an exercise junky that plays games when I invite him, and an avid gamer that plays games when he can. Each one had different expressions after I explained the rules, a couple had that expression of “I don’t know what the heck to do, and I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy this.” BUT, after 15 minutes of some brutal bashing, football steeling, injuries, cheating (cheating is mandatory in Blood Bowl!), everyone was into it and we had a blast!

Today my wife and little boy are out of town, so I’m going to tweak my green and red LOTR: The Card Game deck and try some questing! I’m addicted to that game, and am looking forward to using all the eagle cards for some epic battles. I’m totally geeked out about the tactics eagle card “Landroval.” If it’s in play, and a hero dies, you put the hero back in play with one damage token on it, and put Landroval back in your hand! That action can only be used once per game, but how epic is that!

Anyway, enough about my weekend. Please comment below with games your playing, what types of gamers you’re playing with, and any impressions, tips for others, etc. Whatever you want!

Most likely playing with my favorite all-time game: my seventeen-month-old son Charlie. Also likely to grab some time with Skyrim on PC between laundry loads.

Unfortunately no boardgaming this weekend.

Aside from the usual, I also got in some Blood Bowl: Team Manager and read through the rules to Dice Town and its expansions in the hope that I’d be able to get in a game or two of it – no luck just yet, but the weekend continues!

Well, let’s see. Friday evening was spent in a session of the Pathfinder game I’m in, lasted four or five hours. Our group generally meets every other week over Skype (only way we can play, given that we’re spread across the country), and we’ve gone through a number of different games in the last several years.

I picked up Arimaa this weekend, and my sister and I played three games total. Neither of us had played before, so it was fun learning the game rules and trying out different strategies. I’m hoping this one definitely gets into regular rotation for my gaming.

I don’t know that I’ll be doing much gaming beyond that this weekend, but I hope to get in some Dominion and Ligretto over the Thanksgiving weekend (and if I’m really lucky, Catan and/or Race for the Galaxy…or Ticket to Ride). We’ll see what happens.

I used the BSG board game (with some of the Pegasus expansion) for a teaching project yesterday, and it was a lot of fun. I love the game a lot and have a hard time finding people to play it.

I’m also playing Android by myself (sniff); reading one of the Android-based novels by FFG really put me in the mood!

Playtesting, playtesting and more playtesting. I have a hard deadline of the first week of December to get the latest version of One Way Out back to the publisher. Last test went drastically off the rails, but it led to a fantastic breakthrough which cleaned up the endgame and let me trim about 30% of the components and about 25% off the playing time.

If I find some time, I’d love to get some 7 Wonders in with my new Catan wonder.

Well I’ve been holed up with foot surgery since Thursday so I’ve managed to squeeze in a few games of Le Havre, one of Agricola, some 7 Wonders and a game of Alhambra. Might get a few more games in we’ll see.

I have a game white elephant party coming up in a few weeks; all bring games and then play them after opening. I’m looking forward to trying out Strain and Tulipmania which me and my gf got for the party.

Jim I’ve heard great things about Defenders 2+ but I had yet to hear a report about one player. I’m glad the experience holds up. I may pick it up for my between games game fix. There are only so many times you can lay out solitary before you start to feel like a prisoner.

Got to play some Lord of the Rings: The Card Game and some Dominion with Intrigue and Seaside cards in the mix. It was my first exposure to the Seaside expansion and liked it quite a bit. It was also my first time tackling the Escape from Dol Guldur quest; there were three of us which made it a little easier but there were certainly some very nervous moments.

I’ll be getting together with my group to play some Dresdin Files. Got in some Ticket to Ride earlier today as well as some Magic this afternoon. As always I’m keeping up with about twenty games of Ascension with friends I rarely get to see. I’m hoping that more games take the same route as Ascension and let me play on my phone against my friends from far away. I don’t get nearly enough gaming in and I’m starting to get bored of the basic Ascention available through the app. That got ranty out of no where. And I’ll probably take the new Of Sky & Sea board to show off to the gaming group. No idea if they will play it or not. I kinda burned them out on it during playtest but then again it has been over a year and there are some new folks. We’ll see.

So I just played my first game of Defenders of the Realm. I played by myself using one hero, and it was a treat! It had me cheering over victories and stamping my feet in anger during lost battles. I can’t wait to play this with family and friends.

If my friends and family enjoy it as much as me, it will become my favorite cooperative game!

[update: just ordered the dragon expansion, and added it to the site!]

Oh and if Monday counts as the weekend, I will be playing in a friend’s Cthulhu Invictus game, the Call of Cthulhu campaign set in Ancient Rome. We are recording this as we have people who like listening to our games.

It all depends. If I do go out gaming tomorrow, I have a six hour slot in which I would love to tackle something lengthy like Kingmaker or the original Civilisation. Agricola is high on my list too, but we shall see.

I just finished a fun game of Discworld: Ankh-Morpork with the family.

My game group played our first game of Hollowpoint last night and absolutely loved it. It’s a fantastic Indie RPG by two of the guys who did Diaspora (another great game). The game was probably the bloodiest 3 hours of game-play I’ve ever witnessed. By the end of the game you could almost smell charred flesh as Rome burnt to the ground. Hollowpoint is not for pacifists.

I recently got the Mouse Guard box set and will be reading the manual to get ready for a game of that soon.

BTW Blood Bowl is pretty sweet. It’s now a go-to game for us… with plenty of room for expansions.

I’m organizing a Black Friday Gaming Extravaganza.

I give out fancy award ribbons at my gaming events. Glued to the backs of the ribbons are magnets so they can be displayed on the refrigerators like a worthy report card.

No gaming for me but I’ll be setting up a room for the coming long Thanksgiving weekend for 4 days of non-stop family fest boardgaming, eating and drinking. Arkham Horror, SmallWorld, Catan, Pandemic, Dixit and (hopefully) Flash Point will hit the table plus Tannhauser and Fury of Dracula if I’m lucky.

We play for prizes (gift & movie certificates) so the competition is intense. My wife doesn’t like the long strategy games, so she’ll leave them to my sons and me — but we’ll choose games she likes too (not to mention that she buys the gift cards).

Sleep will be the limiting factor. I can’t wait!
