What are you playing this weekend? (July 11)

I’m not exactly sure what’s in store for this weekend. The game I plan to choose from are Warmachine: High Command, Doomtown: Reloaded and City of Remnants. We’ll see what hits the table!

What are you playing this weekend?

My last week has been dominated by Kickstarter (or Kickstarter-induced) arrivals. I got in one game of Castle Dice over the weekend (the base game came last week as an early-shipment portion of the expansion’s Kickstarter – remainder due in December) and really enjoyed it.

I also got in one big game of Zombicide using the Season 1 promo characters I was forced into buying on eBay due to the Season 3 Kickstarter. The game was awesome – a one-move-from-escape loss – but it was difficult playing without one of the mobile players in the base game (Wendy, Amy or Josh). Probably changed the outcome.

My most significant time drain over the past week has come from Dreadball. The original game (and all 12 of its available teams) arrived last week as another Kickstarter early shipment (this one for the sequel’s fundraising, with further rewards not due until November). 12 teams + 9 team boosters with approximately 8 figures a piece that need to be assembled and painted means I have over 160 miniatures to work on. As of today, I’ve finished assembling 3 of the teams… this is going to take some time.

Just gave Helios a try, another new one not listed here. Not the most compelling theme, but fun to play! (artwork similar to Terra Mystica)

Now that the majority of my board games are unpacked we were able to get some old favourites onto the table.

We played Rialto Friday, Saturday and Sunday and had a different winner each time who used very different strategies. It is nice that the whole group seems to have migrated away from building heavy strategy as it is kind of boring and makes turns take longer. I managed to squeak out a victory by getting 2 blue buildings that give 3VP for 1 coin and then focusing on bridge cards. A good friend of mine brought his SO with him which doesn’t happen often and she absolutely dominated the second night won majority on 4/6 districts and had the 2nd most points in buildings. If you have skipped over Rialto or only placed a couple of times I would encourage getting it onto the table more often.

We also played a couple games of Fairy Tale which has been packed away in a box for at least a month now. I missed playing drafting games. I gambled both times we played by using lots of the Shadow cards and hunt came out both games which made my score pitiful.

Since a longtime friend of mine recently moved back to town I have been getting back into MtG a bit after at least 4 years minus the occasional draft. He bought a deck off of someone at the camp he worked at and its been a painful 30+ games before I could come up with a deck to beat him. I ended up winning 2/3 with a black red control deck last night and won 1/3 with a red/white soldier. They could both use a bit of work but it was nice to finally win, thankfully I never felt too bad since he bought the deck and didn’t make it himself.

We also played 1 game of Thunderstone and it took much longer than it should. We haven’t played in probably 3 months and had 1 completely new player but the general feel was that we should get it back out soon while it is still fresh in everyone’s head. So hopefully we get some Thunderstone in this week.

oddball Aeronauts
Splendor x 2
Crokinole

King of Tokyo with Power Up and Halloween expansions
Sails of Glory (8 player).

Got a bonus play this weekend. Since we were travelling, we took only some light games, but the hotel where we stayed had Ticket to Ride: Europe in the library. So we got to play that for the first time. My wife said, “I wouldn’t mind if you got this game…”

Monthly game day for our game group. Even though I spent over 8 hours there, missing a middle chunk of the day only allowed me to play 4 board games (but got some disc golf and ultimate Frisbee in).

Tried Sushi Go and Discount Salmon. Got two of my 10×10 plays in as well with Lords of Waterdeep and Sails of Glory (a big 8-player battle this time).

Between off-island dentist appointments for the family and the World Cup, probably not a lot of time for gaming this weekend. Probably get a little family gaming in Sunday night – Wits and Wages & Apples to Apples.

Also, one of our local Spielbound volunteers brought his game, Aguirre, to play. It was picked as one of the top 25 on this years Tabletop Deathmatch and I was completely impressed. No matter how it places, this will be one to add to your library in the next year or so.

Just had what may be my last monthly game night before Spielbound opens.
Played Notre Dame, Copycat (which needs to be added here), Roll Through the Ages, Liars Dice, Dominion, Marrying Mr. Darcy, Terra Mystica, Legends of Waterdeep, The Nacho Cheese Incident, Dixit, Discount Salmon x3 (local friends created it & it won Tabletop Deathmatch!), Werewolf, Battlestar Galactica, Betrayal at House on the Hill x2, and Around the World ping pong with 13 players. A full night! 😀

With the Skulls and Shackles base set coming out at the end of August we’ll be spending most of our time with Pathfinder ACG trying to get in one more playthrough of Rise of the Runelords.

If we need a break from all the looting we’ll probably break out some Space Hulk: Death Angel.
