What are you playing this weekend? (Jan 23)

Posted by Jim {Power Gamer} | 23-Jan-15 | 46 comments

It’s gonna be a two-player weekend for me. So on my list to play is Pagoda by AEG, Uncanny X-Men: Dice Masters by WizKids, and Legendary Showdown by Killer Robot Games. It’s gonna be a nice change-up!

What are you playing this weekend?

Was at a friend’s 40th birthday party with five separate tables of gaming going on. Played Sentinels of the Multiverse and got walloped by Wager Master — Captain Cosmic played the wrong construct at the wrong time, which ended up thwarting our “decking” strategy, and extended the game another hour. Then a round of Splendor, and a four-player game of Star Realms (my first, though fairly familiar with deckbuilders). Fun day!

I plan to try out Legendary. Hopefully there will be others, though.

@BitBot Are you homebrewing a WQ campaign or using one of the old box sets? Or as The Boy would call them ‘the sacred, rare, and beautiful’ box sets as he scurries to save them from our burning house and then as an afterthought circles back around to see if I am doing, you know, ‘ok’.

@Granny Sure I’ll swap some Imperial Assault intel if you give me some Hyperborea impressions. Since treading the waters of Lords of Waterdeep I am really trying to make 2015 the year I temper my ‘Burn All Cubes’ Ameritrash mentality. LoW let me in the door with a inch thick sugar coating of theme to help me swallow the pill. Hyperborea intrigues: variable player powers, the bag building of cube fuel, the ‘tech’ powers to buy are right up my street- but watching game play videos leaves me flat because all those juicy bits and play wise it just seems to be ‘place this little dude here and score some points or move this guy over here and get some points’.

I’ll drop you some words over at the IA discussion board

Checked out the new local game Cafe with@SP! I really enjoyed Splendor and Coloretto 🙂 Hopefully tomorrow we will finally get to play Space Alert, which is the only game on our shelf that we have yet to play.

We visited a new game cafe in our town and had a great time! It was quiet since the driving conditions weren’t great, so a couple of the game gurus played Splendor and Coloretto with us, and the owner stopped by for a game of Castles of Burgundy. Hoping to get a few more games in at home before the weekend is over 🙂

So it’s my birthday this weekend so I’ve been playing and will be playing games. Today I played Runebound with my GF, then we went to the pub and played Touch of Evil as well as Coup and a 4 player Star Realms. Tomorrow I’m playing X-Wing as well as Imperial Assault and who knows after. 🙂

I have seen Star Realms mentioned a couple of times here, and thought I would mention that Humble Bundle has a bundle of computerized card games, including Star Realm up for sale. One of the options is a physical copy with a special card and a t-shirt. Other games in the bundle include Talisman and Dominion.

I just received Game of 49 and Evolution…so those will get played. We are also going to delve into Hyberborea and maybe get started on a D&D 5th Edition campaign. I have a stack of Kickstarters that haven’t been played yet…. and I really have to prioritize them and get them to the table (or *gasp* stop spending so much money on KS… nah).

@Hai

What is your opinion of Imperial Assault compared to say Descent (on which its system is based)? Is it more fun? If so, is it the theme that makes it better (or not)?

It’s not like I’m not going to get it…I will. However, I can’t help but feel like I’m going to be a bit disappointed after all the hype. I’m trying to lower my expectations.

The last weekends have been slow on gaming for me. I managed one scenario of Pacg: Skull&Shackles last night, and that will be all for this weekend.

Tonight Mission #2 of the Imperial Assault Campaign

Two weeks ago, on a tabletop about a 30 minute drive away.

Team Rebel vs Starter Mission: Lost to the Sauntering Stormtrooper

Team Rebel vs Mission #1: Doing well. (We thought). Who knew Vader carried a stop watch? Lost to enemy of Imperial and Rebel alike:Time. Wish: There is no round counter. Only do.

Grand Imperial The Boy gloated.

So tonight was a Side Mission. Team Rebel was ready. New game plan. This isn’t a dungeon’crawl’. We need to coordinate. Be efficient and fast.

And…Lose. Turns out no round limit this time (after the fact gloating, but with much marked round counting by Imperial Boy. “Ok..Round 3 already? Let me just spin my dial). No time limit – but Elites and ouch. They are rough on a ragtag bunch of rebels who were only able to buy a not-that-spiffy new gun and hit people stick (or whatever they are called in the Lucasverse) with our defeat funding from last mission. Trying to be quick without taking time to be duck and cover careful = decimation. And gloating.

Curse you Campaign Book of Secrets!

If you look up in the night sky and catch sight of a Death Star – sorry – that’s on me.

(I love this game – but twasn’t so much Star Wars as the last bit of The Wild Bunch

Sadly, the night got cut short as it started to snow 3 hours early. Curse you Snow of Secrets! I don’t like being in moving vehicles in snow. I don’t like other moving vehicles moving around my moving vehicle in the snow. The Boy has proven himself by driving us 5 hours through a snowstorm once but I still get Snow Panicky.

Plenty of white knuckles and closed eyes all around this gaming night.
And now I can’t sleep. I’m sure at any moment I’ll crash and colla

Played “Guardians of the Galaxy” expansion to the Legendary Marvel deckbuilding game with a couple of friends. We played a 4-player game and was able to defeat the Kree Supreme Intelligence with the help of an uncanny crew: Cyclops, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, and Gamora.

Allow me to take the chance to make a recommendation: very similar to the Ascension deckbuilding game system, the game is lots of fun as a competitive co-op and pleasingly thematic. Fans of deckbuilding games and/or the Marvel universe should consider checking this one out.

We then closed the night with three light rounds of Machi Koro. Fun game as always, and due to just having the base game the game can wildly swing in favor of whoever is blessed by the dice, still. A particular friend of ours does refuse to play the game for the very reason. But otherwise it’s light-hearted fun that lends itself to moments of laughter and anticipation for the roll of the dice. And while victory is still in the dice roll one does need to formulate a bit in order to have a fighting chance at the very least.

Recommended to check out how it plays and see if it’s something to your fancy, as it is quite a fresh and unique take on an old mechanism. Also, the Harbor expansion is expected to add more strategy to the game, so if dice rolls do not offend you too much, consider making the jump or stick around to see what people think about the post-expansion strategy-luck balance.

I just got Hanabi so I’m excited to pull that out with the family. Also, a Kickstarter version of Nightlight I expect to pull out Valley of the Kings with my wife. Getting together with some friends tomorrow night and not sure what’s getting pulled out. Maybe 7 Wonders?
