What are you playing this weekend?

Even though we weren’t able to make it to GenCon, we still got some games in the mail during the past few weeks (a combination of pre-ordered/purchased and review copies) and plan to make this weekend our own “mini con”!

The games that came in the mail were:

Only managed a single game of Patchistory. Which was long, but still very cool.

Well the weekend NegCon event is over

Nothing really saw the tabletop beyond Sentinel Tactics and Dead of Winter with two games of Run,Fight, or Die! to break the ‘heavy’ up with a little dice rolling.

I knew the Sen City: Sentinel Tactics Marathon would be a hit with our friends and I really can’t say enough about Dead of Winter. It plays better than it reads – things are always on edge – and get crazy with an exile. Hands down the best not-really-zombie zombie game and Hai-ly recommended!

I hope everyone had a happy weekend of gaming – whether at the Big Four or not.

Did a Marvel Dice Masters tournament at the FLGS this morning and got a couple new cards. Great fun and met some cool people!

This evening I’m hoping to get some folks together for Dead of Winter; probably a co-op game to get everyone used to the mechanics before we start going after personal objectives and exiling each other. 🙂

Just picked up “Hey that’s my fish” and “Valley of Kings”. Not very heavy but should be fun. Also will hopefully have a game night with my brother and his wife, so should see some good gaming there.

I’ll say this about Galactic Strike Force – it isn’t Sentinels – but it is a good game. Although it is easy enough to say ‘What’s up with that???’ about the picture hanging next to the Mona Lisa. 😛 It does have some flaws and even the Greater than Guys seem to quietly admit it may not have incubated enough in the shadow of the Multiverse. I think it suffers a bit from ‘pre-conceived play’ where people sit down to an evening of ‘Sentinels…in …SPAAACCEEE!!!!’ I mean ‘hands of cards vs AI decks, right?’ Far from it. Far from a conventional ‘deckbuilder’ also. (In fact, it seems G > G spins so far ‘deckbuilder left’ it can get a bit fiddley at times.)Sentinels is a game with complexities running off a rather simple engine. It is also very *POW* *BAM* *BIFF*. GSF is complex out of the box. It is also less *pew pew pew DIE!!* and more a rag tag bunch going up against overwhelming odds. Firefly vs Reavers. Admittedly, the first few times I played it I felt very ‘What just happened??’ but it is a game that requires much pow-wowing round the table. With player phases happening ‘together’ – there’s no forgiveness for the hotshot pilot. It’s all about getting on the Comm and giving in to The Force collective.

@The BGdot And for those of you not at GenCon 2014 (like myself *utter sadness*) – it isn’t just a weekend of bitterness and basements. If you are part of the Twitterverse join in on the fun of GenCant2014 and the photo contest.

It’s a parody cyber convention that is blurring into reality. 🙂

And there’s PRIZES!!!!

Like…ummmm….copies of DOOMTOWN:RELOADED!!!!!

NegCon: The GenCon Paradox begins today at noon!

Today will be devoted to Sentinel Tactics! (Although I still have glue jitters so the minis aren’t secure. We’ll see how it goes – prolly wind up using the tokens if too many figs take a tumble.

Tomorrow: Continental Breakfast and Dead of Winter (with more Sentinel Tactics likely if people are still hopped up on the Multiverse)

Splitting up the heavy gaming with some ‘demos’ of pre-Con releases Run,Fight, or Die, Zombie ’15, and an old fave Quarriors with the new Light vs Dark set (although I am not fanning the ‘reboot’ rule mechanics very much/at all. 🙁 )

Reading through the rules of both Sentinel Tactics and Dead of Winter and doing a few dry mechanic/teaching runs of both during the week. Both games vibe: glorious! Wonderful additions to any tabletop. (@Granny – you are correct. Plaid Hat makes excellent cardboard creations. Even Dungeon Run (which I still wish would get an expansion))

(Machina Arcana and Foretold were on the Con Demo list but I have a feeling they won’t hit table due to glut runs of the top two.)

And now to make some badges…

We’ll be playing some DC Comics Deck-Building Game with the new Crisis expansion. Been thinking about that one since last weekend! Crisis adds a LOT to the game, makes it harder (and cooperative!), and some tension too!

Yep! It arrived today not long after my last post. This one may have to get a look-see this weekend as well.

BTW Galactic Strike Force is not bad. In fact, it’s REALLY hard to beat. It just felt a little like a sophomore slump compared to SotM. I have friends who like it a lot, so I do recommend giving it a chance.

@Granny – I received shipping notification early yesterday morning (the 14th) stating it would arrive on the 19th. Instead, it was at my doorstep last night. Not trying to get your hopes up, but it could be there today.

I haven’t tried Galactic Strike Force yet, but I have pretty high expectations. I guess I should temper those!

You got your copy of Sentinel Tactics already? I just received shipping confirmation yesterday. I’m curious about this game, as I don’t love Galactic Strike Force. I don’t expect Greater Than Games to put out A+ games every time…but I am curious as to their ability to recapture the magic of Sentinels of the Multiverse.

Speaking of recapturing magic. Plaid Hat Games has yet to disappoint. I hold two of their games in my top 20, and have replayed all of them. City of Remnants is the only game with a few issues that have been fixed by errata. Now, they’ve released Dead of Winter. I’ve been reading the rule book, and watching videos. I think I’m going to run through it today. It looks like another winner for the plaid people.

I’m also going to try out King’s Forge. It looks like a pretty good game. The art and components are fantastic. If anything, I can use the big black anvil as a paperweight. I remember liking the gameplay from videos…but it has been a few months.

I’ll also be playing Dungeon Fighter and a few other dexterity games at our game day. Dexterity games is the theme after all. I may bring my old copy of Catacombs, and a couple others. There are some older folks in my group, so broken hips are in the realm of possibility. If you’ve played Dungeon Fighter, you know what I mean.
