I edited my review for M&M, as I used to adore the game. My feelings have changed, as the game is subject to the occasional flop. And, it can go LONG. Nevertheless, it is a fun game worth trying. With the right group, you may be able to avoid the black spots.

On the other hand, Fortune and Glory is some chewy campy goodness. It’s not borderline simulation like M&M. In fact, I’d be ecstatic to see Flying Frog give pirates a go. I’m sure they’d stuff it full of pirate flavor (still not sure that sounds right). Flying Frog games are not necessarily mechanically brilliant or balanced, but they drip with theme, and who doesn’t like their game coated in theme?

Both games are worth a play or two to see if they fit.

@Stratagon In my book the weekly Explorable Faves accomplish two things: they stock the Sacred Shelf and shine a spotlight on games that might be chatter worthy favorites to some and unknown worth-a-looks to others. Either way it makes for a pocket watering hole for lively discussion. They also stir the pot a bit and create an avenue for freshening the joint up with new solid reviews and tips. Some might try to cherry pick the tip jar, others don’t. I’m sure the Medal Faerie takes that into consideration and Jack the Downgrader can handle the rest. 😉

On a side note: “Who I would like to play against” always makes a good, fun button for your reviews and I enjoy them. I have a feeling Elizabeth Swann would give you a sound trouncing though.

Fortune and Glory Whee! The Frog of Flying makes it to the Sacred Shelf two weeks in a row. Prepare to whip up and kill an evening. 🙂 There are some corners of the Cardboard Kingdom that shake fists at the heavens about the ‘Coffin Box’, but I think certain games deserve to wear them like a badge of honor. Twilight Imperium and Decent 2ed are coffins of epicness. Fortune and Glory likewise should be opened like the Ark of the Covenant. This is the Frog’s epic. What better way to capture the theme of pulp tropes and cliffhangers than with a mysterious over-sized box full of goodness.
Competitive + Vile Organizations is the only way to play! 😉

This past holiday season The Frog released two nifty expansions for thankfully acronym’d FanG: Treasure Hunters (a Hero Pack type expansion) and Rise of the Crimson Hand(bringing a new Vile Organization and more death defying leaps and challenges to the game. It was interesting to see the Crimson Hand get crossover from Touch of Evil – apparently they have been around longer than Eternal Cartwright) If it was because it landed on the radar of Team Wil-icia and hit the Tabletop – thanks for that. 🙂 🙂

Merchants and Marauders just made the Wish List and that’s what Explorable Favorites is all about. 🙂 (Making me spend money at some point down the road apparently :P). Checking our game den, I found it sparse on eye patches. 🙁 There’s Armada 3 (Pirate 4x), Plunder (a neat little build-a-map card game), Munchkin Booty (which counts as a ‘Pirate Game’ as much as Pirate’s Cove in my book :P) and the short-lived second coming of Avalon Hill‘s Sword & Skull (Pirate Talisman)(but it also brought us Betrayal at the House on the Hill which for the record needs another reboot and an expansion. What an underappreciated gem!)

Merchants and Marauders sounds like it will completely fit the bill for an evening of shivered timbers and piratey fun! 🙂

I would like to thank the Medal Faerie for visiting my recent review! (Under “Who I would like to play against” I almost listed “Medal Faerie”, because it’s true, but I didn’t want it to look like I was kissing up for medals…)

I think the choices this week are great. I have been looking at Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game for quite a while now, and seeing Merchants & Marauders makes me want to be a pirate.

I will definitely be getting Fortune and Glory soon, and now that I have explored Merchants & Marauders a bit more, I might even be getting that one as well.

Nice choices! These are two very thematic games that have been on my radar for awhile. I’m thinking I’ll have to pull the trigger at some point…

Thanks Protagonist, just fixed it! We don’t have a bug submission form, usually the best way is to post a comment like you did, or contact me via the Contact Us page.

Merchants & Marauders isn’t a link at the moment. I searched for and found it, but I figured you should know. Is there a bug submission form somewhere?
