“Spending Emergency Funding”

As a general rule, I take 4 credits on the first turn, 3 credits on the second turn, then 2, and then 1. This gives you time to get your Tech built up and not need to worry too much about losing soldiers and interceptors dying.

“Marines! Go!Go!Go!”

Priorize the missions as much as possible, giving them resources enough to have a fair chance to even complete the mission in one turn.
This means also keeping your squad at full and taking advantage of training and specialization as much as possible.
If you not complete the missions, as in the digital versions of the game, the App will give you worse situation for next turns, arriving to chaotic situations such as deploying your fighters without information on where the UFOs would be.

“Delay Mission Until Turn 2”

We’ve started to delay assigning Soldiers to the Mission until Round 2, and instead focusing on Scientific Research, Base Defense and buying more Soldiers.

And for the Technologies to Research, getting the Communications Officer’s Tech’s early really help the entire team over the game: Having the ability to use a Tech card twice, reduce Panic, auto-Succeed at a Task or gain Funding, help a great deal and allow the team to perform better when most needed. i.e. when a tough Crises Card must be dealt with.

“Go All Out On Science The First Turn”

Use most, if not all, of your scientists the first turn. Roll unto you lose them. This will mean you’ll need some Emergency Funding this first turn–I suggest 4–and you might not have many scientists next turn. That’s okay, the value of having 3 nice tech right off is well worth it.

“Accountability wons battles”

Managing the money is key for winning, and for this it is very usefull to take some time between rounds to discuss.
Assign maximum budgets for each role, priorizing first mission completion. Then deal with scientifics thinking that could be better to ensure one project than to try to get the three of them.
Last resources goes to global defense. And save some money to possible buy new soldiers and fighters to keep the first at full capacity and the second in a reasonable quantity.

“App on a TV to increase the feels”

As the app is the core of this game, if you have a way to project it onto a TV (Lightning to HDMI, HDMI out, etc), this really amps up the feeling of community fostered by the game.

“Slightly Different Scoring”

I like the section at the very end of the book detailing scoring.
Mostly.

I was kind of sad to see that the only way to gain points was to win the game, so here’s some additional scoring parameters that I’ve added.

+1 if the continent you HQ is in is in the yellow
+1 for each elite soldier you have
+1 for each credit remaining on Emergency Funding
+5 if you completed a mission every round.
