“Ask Leading Questions”

I will often give clues that use the 3-word rule to lead into a 4th word. Example: getting from “short” to “wood”, I might say:

“Opposite of Short” to get “Tall”. Then I might say “Tall as a…” to try to get “Tree”. From there, it might be “Tree made of…” to get “Wood” FTW!

“Plan in Reverse”

While planning my “attack” in ToT, I will try to figure out what the most likely link in the chain is from back to front.

So, if the Destination word is “Table”, I might think that I want to use a clue like “Furniture in Kitchen” to get to Table. So, then I need to figure out how to make the group say “Kitchen” or “Furniture” from the Start word.

Sometimes, thinking in reverse can help you move forward!

“Playing with the Spirit of the Game”

Probably the most confusing part of the rules, it’s really simply this: The first clue you give *must* include the start word and *must* make some kind of logical / coherent statement in 3 words.

Example: Start – “Fish”; Destination – “Bag”

Saying something like “Fish Holds Groceries” would be an illegal clue because the words aren’t logically connected.

“Put cars in-between the engine and caboose ~ A ToT Tip”

You do not need anyone to get the word on the first try. Relax! You can chain clues. For instance… if you are trying to go from “Bird” to “Donut”… you might try to get from “Bird” to “Pie” by saying “Birds baked in”… then “Pie is a”… “Dessert with hole”… “Donut!” It’s a Train of Thought!

Skipping will cost you points, and struggling to make a big leap will take more time than creating a chain… I promise.

“Just Say Something!”

Often, people will get stuck for a way to provide a clue and get to the destination word. Help them out and just say something. Even a seemingly unrelated word will often light the way to building a successful “Train of Thought”.
