“Rule Clarification”

There is a fairly good review for this game on this site already by RichardHS – but he has one of the main rules wrong. He states that he does not understand why someone would be interested in demolishing a building or adding dice to the abandoned site (which can then give a later player more dice on their turn).
In this game you don’t roll the dice 3 times and keep what you like. On each roll you must do one of three things:
1) Build with at least one die. If there are no legal builds with what you rolled you cannot take this option
2) Put at least one of the dice you rolled in the abandoned site – this is a penalty for a roll that doesn’t allow at least one build.
3) Demolish one of your buildings (finished or not) – this is the other choice for penalty for a roll that doesn’t allow at least one build

Once you have done one of these 3 things then you decide to roll again or stop. If you ‘Abandon’ then you will have one less die for the next roll if that is what you choose but a later opponent (or perhaps even you if no one chooses the abandoned site until your next turn) will have more than 3 dice to roll on their turn (just no choice what they are). If you ‘Demolish’ one of your buildings (often a ground floor that isn’t going anywhere) you can re-roll all the dice you had on the previous roll.

This game is still filler – but there are actually a few decent decisions here.

“Build some one point buildings”

Sometimes you need an extra role of a die and the demolish action can be very useful to do just that. If you build some one point buildings (which are just the base of a low-rise) then when you roll your 3 dice and nothing is useful you can give that up and roll again!

“Don't forget to save some dice”

You must do a build, abandon or demolish action each roll, but after you have done that you can put a dice or two to the side that would be useful, but isn’t right then. You should do that, just saying.

Here is an example to explain better what I mean:

Lets say you have a mid-level building in construction and it is only the ground floor and you have a high-rise building in construction that has the lower level currently constructed. You roll your three dice (for this example 2 mid-level and a penthouse) and you get a mid-level for a mid-rise (which you add to your mid-rise), a low-rise mid-level die and a high-rise penthouse. You have taken the construct action by adding the mid-level to your mid-rise building and you want to possibly build the high-rise penthouse. You then only re-roll the mid-level low-rise dice and see what you get.

Maybe it gives you what you need and maybe not, but if it does you are able to finish a building because of the saved dice. Think of it like Yahtzee and that might help you understand what I am talking about.

“Only play scenarios for experienced players”

If you are playing either a mixed game or a game with only experienced Skyline players then I recommend giving the experience players one of the scenarios in the rule book and letting the newbies play for points. The winner would be the person with the most points, but the experienced players would have to complete the scenario as well.
