“Need an extra ship? Try bankruptcy!”

Since every employed marker in the game is interchangeable, that includes your starting Banker marker. If you feel you could benefit from having a fleet of ships out to collect trade goods from the coastal towns, spend all of your cash first. This sets your available wealth to zero, moving the marker you have employed as a Banker back to Lisboa — where you may immediately use it as a ship. It is helpful to do this when you spend your last cash either on a ship speed upgrade, or on employing a new worker. You will have one extra ship destined to carry trade goods back for sale, which can then immediately be converted back into a banker.

“Speedboats work better than dinghies”

It is usually worth it to spend one of your earliest actions (and 2 wealth) to upgrade your Ship Speed from 1 to 2. Not only will you be able to explore the outer coastal towns quicker, but you will more easily avoid getting blocked on trade goods close in to Lisboa. Whether you spend the 4 wealth later to upgrade from 2 Speed to 3 is up to you; if you wish to pursue an aggressive exploration strategy, it can be key.
