“What power plants to buy”

It is of great value to pay more money for versatile power plants (the ones that can use oil and coal). Because later on you can always buy the cheaper resource and save money

“Buy all the available resources on the last round”

If your plants electrify less cities than the other players plants and winning seems impossible, when the end game condition is about to be triggered, try to buy as many resources as possible and build the last house. The other players will not be able to power their plants and you will win with the fewest electrified cities.

“Wide Open Spaces”

For a game with a new player, try one game with no regions blocked out. This lets people learn the rules without facing being blocked in early on.

“Don't overspend”

Learn when and how you’re going to get resources, and pay attention to when you can spend those resources. Veteran players know that it’s really easy to spend everything you have, and then lose a turn rebuilding.

“Don't buy 2 plants with the same power ”

Buy power plants that can progressively power more cities. Your goal should be to buy the fewest number of plants you can to power the number of cities required to win.

“The Fall Man”

If you know you are one turn away from winning (unless you are playing with experienced players, no one will notice this until the power plant stage in the final round), only power some of your plants to land in last place. Having first dibs on resources and cities along with an unattested plant buy will almost ensure your victory, because (if you are the only one in this spot) everyone will work to block your victory if you go first.

“Don't try to win...until its time to win”

Try to stay in last place by one city as long as possible, amassing cash for the final push. Being in first place is a huge disadvantage most of the game.

“Know your opponents”

When i’ve played there are two types of people, those who like to get into confrontations and those who don’t.

Exploit this get into bidding wars with power plants you don’t care about with those who get sucked into the auction, and can’t lose.

And then go head to head with those who don’t like confrontation for the power plants you actually want.

“"Starting Cities"”

If you want to have less conflict early in the game, don’t limit yourself to specific zones on the map. You could also agree to a specific number of “starting cities” to maximize the distance between other players at the start of the game.

If you feel the conflict level is fine, then skip this house rule.
