“How to use the regular villager”

Being a regular villager is the worst role to receive but if there are more then one in the play set there are ways to retreive information on others.

First you’ll need to hold back and not claim to be a villager right away but rather pay attention to who does. When playing with more then one villager a werewolf will often claim to be one as soon as eyes are opened.

Getting everyone to see your cause might be another challenge though…

“Werewolf Hunting Through Logic and Instinct”

During some games, all you need to find a werewolf is to put a few clues together that form an obvious chain. These occurrences are fairly dry events and will play themselves. More challenging situations will require more advanced deductive tactics.

Look for inconsistencies. If two players seem to contradict each other, it almost always means that one is a werewolf. Probe deeper towards these players and see if you can uncover the truth.

When logic fails to reveal a lycanthrope, you can fall back on instinct. From the day we are born, we project and interpret body language subconsciously. Something about a player may not “feel” right. This seems like intuition (or superstition!) but it very well may be your instincts picking up on hidden messages that player is transmitting. Use this natural warning system to help choose when presented with narrow decisions.

“Get Out of Your Chair. It's Bedtime!”

During the “night”, closing your eyes and making distracting noises help mask the actions of the active players. Unfortunately, bumping the table or another player can be a dead giveaway that you are the active one. With a limited time frame to act and many people gathered near, this is difficult to avoid.

Before starting the night script, all players should stand up and back a few feet from the table. This will provide elbow room for stealthy movement. After you execute your role, step back away from the table to open up space for the next player. Don’t forget to sit back down after the day begins!

“Troublemaker”

This is in my book the most powerful role in ONUW. Simply because it is the last role that will allow someone to switch roles. As often the case in this game, the key is once again to lie to try and out a werewolf. Do not start off by saying who you switched but try and pick up information from robber/ seer and use that knowledge.

Did someone claim a villager quickly? Say you switched that person. If he/she was a werewolf they will often admit it now as supposedly someone else has their role. Few wins are more satisfying then getting a werewolf to reveal itself like that.

“Moving cards”

One sign often used by players is seeing their card slightly moved from where it laid at the start of the game. This is a clear sign that someone has looked at you card or changed it with someone else.

I’d recommend to add a little pause when everyone has completed their actions and before opening your eyes for everyone to slightly move their own role card to not give away information.

“smart phone app”

There is a free iphone and android app for this game that makes it so much easier on all players. You can select which town roles you are playing with, how many players, and then the announcer takes over for the night activation and even announces the power of the person being activated for new players. You can set it up for certain time limits during the night activation and also different time limits on voting for the werewolves among you.
