“Never let them choose”

This may be specific to our group, but we never let people choose their Character cards anymore, even when they must choose between two. We have very strong player personalities in our group, and the same people always play with the same Characters.

If that happens in your group, either eliminate those Characters, or completely randomize Character selection at the start. It greatly increases the replayability, in our opinion.

“Snake drafting”

When using the replacement strip option use snake drafting to choose strips-This is the same method used in Settlers of Catan for placing settlements at the start-Player A chooses a strip then B C and so on to the last player, after he chooses you draft a second strip starting with the last player, then next to last and so on back to the first player. Always choose a strip as you are not required to actually play them, but can influence other players’ options.

“Go with the King's Aid”

We played with the Military markers a few times, and they were universally despised. With good players, you’ll never lose with them. At least with the King’s Aid (rolling the dice for army support in the winter), you have a chance to lose.

Skip this part of the expansion. Play with the rest.

“Event Cards”

Another variant rule:

The player with the least victory points selects the Event Card from a draw of 3 cards.

“Character Cards”

More of a variant than an actual house rule, we’ve tried the following:

2-player games
Each player chooses their opponent’s Character Card, which are then revealed simultaneously.

3-player(+) games
Each player chooses the Character Card of the player on their left; the cards are then revealed simultaneously.

“Look at your opponents dice”

Compare the values of the other players. One of the worst thing to happen is being unable to play all your dice when the time comes. So do the important ones first, but maybe change tactics just so you can play all the dice.

“Don't play with military markers”

We never use them, as they completely remove the uncertainty at wartime, an element which made the original game very exciting at the end of each year, never knowing how much support we’d get from the king.
