“Secure the East!”

When playing the Union, make sure you secure Washington DC in the early turns of the game. It is a 30 Strategic Will penalty if you lose Washington DC which is utterly huge and probably insurmountable! Make sure the Army of the Potomac is well stocked with plenty of Strength Points (SPs) of troops. Also, build a fort in Harpers Ferry and Frederick, and garrison them with at least 2 SPs. Keep a close eye on what the CSA player is doing around Richmond. Match his SPs with SPs of your own and also match his number of Armies as well. Finally, secure the backdoor through West Virginia. Keep a couple of SPs in Franklin, WVA or better yet a couple SPs and a fort in Franklin to prevent an end around into the East. Make sure Washington DC is secured before taking on any endeavors in Kentucky or the West.

“Man the Guns!”

One of the first things the Confederate player should do is garrison its coastal forts. Placing 1 SP in its coastal forts makes it significantly more difficult for the Union to take a fort by amphibious assault. This will force the Union player to burn cards building his Amphibious Assault Modifier. More importantly, these forts protect blockade runner ports. Once all the blockade runner ports in a blockade zone are closed, then the Confederacy loses an SP reinforcement and also suffers a Strategic Will penalty EACH turn! The loss of an SP or two and the cumulative Strategic Will loss can add up over the course of a game! In addition, the New Orleans coastal fort also protects the Mississippi River. If the Union takes control of the NO coastal fort, then they have just gained access to most of the Mississippi River and potentially blocked Line of Communications for the Confederacy west of the river. Give the Union a good fight and man the guns at the coastal forts!
