“Play the hand you're dealt”

This is good advice for games in general, but it certainly applies to this game. Play the hand you’re dealt.

At the beginning of the game you start with 2 diplomacy cards and getting more cards or different cards can be difficult. Therefore, it is advantageous to go after planets that match the cards you start with. For example, while you may have your eye on a Peaceful planet because of the special ability it gives you, it would not be an efficient use of actions to try to get 2 or 3 Peaceful cards just so you can befriend it. Instead you should look at the cards you do have and find planets near you that match that type.

Befriend the planets that it is easy to befriend, not the ones you may want the most.

“Download Revised rules and expansion”

The designer has released revised rules that are much better, and incorporated some changes as a free expansion. He put out a technology board for each player, to replace the tech tokens, and there are a lot of other nice changes. It’s free, all you need is some good cardstock to print on. It is actually encouraged from the designer that you immediately use the expansion, and I completely agree. Key to the Universe expansion

“More Choice for Diplomacy Cards”

Rather than simply drawing off the top of the deck, lay out 4 cards face-up. When you acquire a new card, you may either take one of the face-up cards or the top one off the deck. You may also trade with the face-up cards.
