“Playing with Kids?”

Young ones are able to play this game because even if they can’t do the trivia questions there is an equal amount of sculpting, drawling, and charades that they can handle in the Creative Cat or Star Performer.

If you have a younger crowd, just remove the Triva options to make it easier and when you roll that color, instead let it be a choice for the player or team of the other remaining catagories.

“Choose teams carefully!”

If you want to be on the winning team for Cranium, it helps to partner with someone you know pretty well and spend a lot of time with. Even if your partner is an excellent gamer, they might not have the personal experiences that will give you shortcuts when guessing things in pictionary or charades. Sometimes having a memorable shared experience gives you a faster way to make someone say a specific word than you could otherwise.

Remember that this can work against you too. If two people that know each other really well are split onto different teams, avoid using personal hints during “all play” rounds. You’re probably giving them a better hint than you are your own team member in that case.

“Cover your drawing or sculpture”

This sounds a bit crazy, but it works surprisingly often. Sometimes when you’re drawing something, people get stuck on something that it looked like when you started the drawing. they keep guessing things in that frame of mind, and just get stuck there.

The trick is to break your teammate’s concentration. When you’re finished drawing, cover your drawing with your hands for a moment. Then dramatically pull your hands back. I won’t promise that it’ll work every time, but it has many times for me.

Works the same for sculpting.

“Speed things up... let everyone use the fast track!”

My biggest complaint with Cranium is the time it takes to play. I advise pretending the slow track is just not there. This is effectively how the Cranium Turbo game is, and I highly advise using that all the time. If you crave more Cranium than that provides, mix up teams and play again!

“Clay dried up? Make more! ”

I have noticed that the cool purple clay dries up easily if left out. rather than ditch the game, or use the inferior Play-Doh, make your own replacement. Here is a recipe: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Playdough-Play-doh/

My advice is to use a kool-Aid packet for color and scent. Go grape and people might not even realize it’s not the Cranium purple clay.

“Veto Styles”

A lot of my friends have a particular Cranium Mini-Game they hate. One friend hates sculpting, another hates acting, and a third can’t draw.

One of the house rules we play with is a “veto” option: Each player picks one game they hate, and replaces it with their favorite. So I never have to sculpt, and I get to play charades a bit more, and my buddy Sam never plays Charades, and gets to draw more.

Everyone has more fun, times two!

“Add booze to make this fun party game get crazy”

It seems every time this game gets pulled out of the closet the booze come out. Things start pretty tame and there is general laughter and good times but by the end when people are buzzed things get loud and crazy, especially charades. We love it when it is crazy, it’s not so much about who wins but what team can get the most rowdy.

“Have Way too many People?”

Several times at New Years parties we’ve used the creative cat or star performer cards to play pictionary. Just use the subject and it works great.
