Overview

Dominion is a self contained deck building game set in mediaeval Europe. The aim of the game is to get the largest fiefdom amongst your peers. The game mechanic is using your income to increase itself until your income is sufficient to buy large tracts of land.

Playability

Although I’d never played a deck building game before, I found it easy to understand the mechanics of it and even my (ever suffering) husband grasped them from the walk-through sheet. It played well with three people, although a little slowly as it was a learning experience for two of us. It took us around an hour for the basic game, which was quite enjoyable.

Opinions

Although I am assured that every game feels different, I’m not sure using the same basic set-up would give a sufficiently different experience. I enjoyed the game and wanted to play another straight off, but time precluded that. I’m not sure that a third would have been welcome though. The first game was all focused on the mechanic with very little input to the theme. I’m sure with more practice and a wider group of players the theme would become stronger, but it’s clearly an add on, not an immersive experience.

Overview
Fluxx is a multiplayer card game where the cards you choose to play alter the rules and the win criteria as you go along. You can also play keeper cards to try to achieve the labile win conditions.

Playability
Fluxx is an easily learned game and playable by 2 or more players, I think the largest number of people I’ve played with one pack is 9 players, it gets a little unwieldy with that number of players, but it can be done. Because it changes, it can be replayed fairly frequently. It is a lightweight game, not to be taken too seriously, it would never be the focus of an evening, but it goes down nicely as a filler between heavyweight games, or as an interlude for conversation that has become a bit bogged down.

Opinions
I enjoy this game in small doses. I’m glad to have it in my repertoire and as my life has changed so I game infrequently and more often with family or non gamers, it probably comes out as often as anything else I own. If winning is important to you, this is not your game, if the experience and flow is more your style, have lots of fun with it.

Overview
12 river tiles that must be played first, they create both a flow and a barrier in the game.

Playability
It integrates exceptionally well with the original and adds very little time to the game (which is positive in my opinion)

Opinions
Although the playing of the river at the beginning seems artificial, and a little boring, I like the effect it has on the game. The complex barrier it creates adds interest to the farming aspect and makes me think a little harder (again, quite welcome). If I am given the choice, I always choose to use it, despite it’s effect on the start. It has subtle effects on the rest of game play that are worth the disjointed & boring start.
